David “Dave” Joseph Fontes was born to the late Joseph Lopes Fontes and Adeline Baptiste in Wareham, MA on February 14, 1936. He made his entrance on a stormy winter night and was remarkably beautiful child. People would stop and stare at this beautiful brown baby with a head full of bright red hair.

Dave grew up in Onset, Massachusetts , his love of the ocean developed early as he was often out fishing with his father, his sister Julia remembers receiving phone calls from neighbors “Dave’s walking down the street naked heading to the water”! He loved the water, and nothing gave him more joy than seeing a bass on the end of his fishing line.

Dave was educated in the Wareham Public Schools where he was a standout athlete. He was on the swim team, played football but excelled in track. Immediately after High School, he enlisted in the US Army Airborne Division and served as a Paratrooper.

Dave met and married Elizabeth Thomas in Fort Bragg, NC., from this union his loving children, David and Donna were born. He later married Marsha Hodge. This union blessed his life with his youngest child, David J. Fontes, III. He worked for many years at Wonder Bread before joining the Local 7 Ironworkers Union where he worked for over 30 years.

Dave will be remembered as a kind, gentle and humble soul. He stepped up as a father figure to his nieces and nephew. He was always present at family events sitting quietly with a smile on his face. He made certain that he knew all his family members and that everyone knew his.

Dave departed this life on June 20, 2019. His was preceded in death by his son, David Fontes III; his parents, Joseph and Adeline; siblings, Avelino (Roy), Gloria, Melvyn and Manuel (Junior).

Dave leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Marsha Fontes, his children, David Fontes and Donna Fontes Trowers, son-in-law, David Trowers of Boston, MA, stepchildren, Toyja and Kyle Hodge, one sister, Julia (Fontes) Martin of Boston, MA, one brother, Albert Peters of Hampden, CT, sister-in-law, Della Fontes. He also leaves his grandchildren Dennis Fontes, Jamar Bland, Ashley Trowers, Sumaya, Shantel, Lee Taleaha, Kyle and Kyla, great-grandchildren, Donnece, Taylor, Nakiya, Antoine, Janiyah, and King , one great-grat-grandchild, Amere all of Boston, MA .

Dave also leaves a host of other family members who will miss him profoundly.

To the family and friends of David Fontes,
I am very sorry for your loss.
The wise man Solomon at Ecclesiastes 9:11,12 tells us “I have seen something further under the sun, that the swift do not always win the race, nor do the mighty win the battle, nor do the wise always have the food, nor do the intelligent always have the riches, nor do those with knowledge always have success, because time and unexpected events overtake them all. For man does not know his time. Just as fish are caught in an evil net and birds are caught in a trap, so the sons of men are ensnared in a time of disaster, when it suddenly overtakes them..”
Yet we can take comfort knowing that there is One who can and will remove such tragedies forever.
Until then may you find comfort in the Bible’s hope that one day we will see our lost loved ones again.
Jesus also showed how this promise is sure when he resurrected Lazarus. John 11:1-44.
Such bible truths provide us with hope and comfort as we look forward to the day when death will no longer be and those who have sadly lost their lives will be awakened onto a Paradisiac Earth, to a life free of sickness, pain, sorrow and the worries of ever dying again.
This being the Creator’s original purpose, it will indeed be fulfilled.
Yes, Knowing this makes one wonder what wonderful new things Dave will be able to achieve in the near future.
Genesis 2:7, 8; Isaiah 55:11; Isaiah 25:8; Revelation 21:3, 4; John 6:40; 1 Corinthians 15:25, 26🙏🏿
