Doris Verniece Jackman Allen was born in Boston, Massachusetts on May 30, 1923. She lived an amazing 96 years and went home to be with the Lord on July 29, 2019.

She was the daughter of two wonderful and loving parents, Edna and Beresford Jackman of Barbados who settled in Boston’s Back Bay area in the 1890s. Doris grew up in a strong and loving Caribbean community where she, along with her siblings, Ivan, Kent, and Violet, learned the importance of building a strong mind and spirit.

Doris attended Girls High in Boston. An avid reader, writer, and creative thinker, she graduated from high school in 1941 with an interest in journalism. During this time, she also discovered her gift for writing poetry; a talent she would foster throughout her life.

After high school, she attended Boston Clerical. Graduating at age 18, Doris accepted employment in
Washington D.C. where she utilized her secretarial and journalism skills. Returning to Boston, she took
advanced civil service examinations. Dedication and hard work led to a promotion to Office Manager
for the State Department of Mental Health. In her spare time, Doris continued to write poetry, craft
articles, and study dance while continuing her love of reading.

Doris began a relationship with the love of her life, Bill, when she was 14. She devotedly wrote letters to her fiancé while he served in the US Coast Guard. The two were married on November 28, 1942 and remained together for 68 loving years. Their family grew with the birth of their daughter Beverly followed by their next daughter, Lynnette, and their son, Duane.

Doris was a proud member of the elite 464 of the Women’s Service Club; an organization comprised
of dedicated Bostonian women whose mission was to serve and enhance the community. Club 464 was
like a family to her during her 47 years of service. She considered all of the members her “sisters.”

The arts were very important to Doris. She began her dance studies at age 12 at the Mildred Davenport
Dance Studio in Boston and continued dancing well into her 80’s. She choreographed professional dance performances and developed plays and skits with 464. She was also the author of more than 60 poems. She proudly graced family occasions with original poems. No milestone would be complete without one of her works!

Doris was the matriarch of her family with a magical presence–she was a true fashionista and
trend-setter. She had impeccable taste; always leaving a lasting image of grace and elegance. More
importantly, she was the catalyst in keeping the family together. Family members treasured her advice, comfort, and love. You could always count on her infectious smile to warm you up and get you moving back on track. She was a pied piper; supported and loved by all.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband William “Bill” Allen, her parents Edna and Beresford Jackman, her siblings Violet Kirton and Beresford “Ivan” Jackman.

She leaves a legacy of love and family, including daughters Beverly Allen Richardson and Lynnette Rene Allen; son Duane Richard Allen; son-in- law Alberto Richardson; her younger brother Kentworth “Kent” Jackman; sister-in-law Dorothy Jackman; grandchildren Dara Overstreet, Erika Hall, and Dina Allen; great-grandchildren Camryn and Christian Overstreet and Eila Hall; in addition to a host of nieces, nephews, other loved ones, and cherished friends.
