Obituary

On July 31, 2020, God called home his good and faithful servant, Homer “Jack” Leroy Thornhill. Jack was the son of late Jesse Thornhill and the late Willa Mae (Downer) Thornhill. Jack was born in LaGrange, Georgia on June 10th 1926 and was the middle child of five children, of this union was his pre-deceased loving brothers, George Thornhill, Edsel (Bud) Thornhill, and James Lee Thornhill; he also leaves to mourn his loving sister, Ruby Bellamy. After living in several Southern states, the family migrated to Detroit, Michigan, where Jack met his future wife, Margaret Cooney.

Jack and Margaret set out for Boston, Massachusetts in 1959, where they began their family in 1961. Of this union, their children were born: twins, the late Mark Steven Thornhill and Marcia Ann Thornhill, and Jacqueline Alicia Thornhill. Jack began his working career in the catering and hospitality industries and continued working until 2006—at the tender age of 80, where he worked for over 30 years as a Sous Chef at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Cambridge, Mass. Jack was a loving and caring companion to his wife, and a great father and caretaker to his family. Jack was a loving, gentle father and a playful, loving grandfather and great grandfather, who cared for and helped anyone needing it. Jack’s favorite memorable past times with family and friends were fishing and playing cards.

Jack is pre-deceased by his loving wife of 25 years, Margaret Cooney, pre-deceased by his loving stepmother Golden E. Thornhill and Jack is also pre-deceased by his loving and devoted son-in-law, Alfonso Diaz Jr.

Jack leaves behind to mourn and emulate his extraordinary life; his loving children, his grandchildren, Margaret Morris, Michelle Morris, twins Michael and Monica Morris, Bianca Diaz, Marquise Campbell, Jason Campbell, Moniquca Campbell, Tyrell Jackson and Mark Wiley. Great grandchildren Tyrell Jr, twins Mason and Logan, Mark Jr, Xavier, Massiah, Aniyah, Rakeem Jr, Joel, Jaylee and Cameron. Jack also leaves behind to mourn loving nephews, nieces, and great nephews, great-nieces, and long-life friends.

For those of us who have been fortunate enough to have Homer “Jack” Leroy Thornhill in our lives in any way, take with you his strength, love of his family and perseverance in life.

Rest in peace Uncle Jack. Will always have fond memories of your love, kindness and getting us out of impending butt whoopings. Will always remember the way you jingled the change in your pockets before passing out change to all us kids. Till we meet again...Love, your niece Arlene aka "Beano".

“Because you loved me I overcome,
And I know your so proud of what I’ve become
You’ve given me such security
No matter what mistakes I made, you were there for me
Your cure my disappointments and you healed my pain
You understand me and you protected me
I treasure every irreplaceable memory”. ~Beyoncé
These lyrics to this song could not be more true. Jack you raised me as if I were your own, and for that I am forever grateful. I love you forever and always.
